Commissioning Of The District National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Office
On Thursday, August 1, 2024, the Shama District Office of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) was officially commissioned by Dr. Aboagye DaCosta, CEO of NHIA. The event was attended by several distinguished guests, including the CEO of NHIA, board members, traditional leaders (Nananom), the District Chief Executive of Shama, and the CEO of Lower Pra Rural Bank, among others.
In his address, the Honourable D.C.E. highlighted the significance of this milestone in enhancing access to quality healthcare for the people of Shama District. He emphasized that the new office is more than just a building; it represents our collective commitment to improving the health and well-being of our citizens. As he noted, “Ewo nkwa ah na Ewo adze,” reflecting our dedication to health and progress.
The National Health Insurance Scheme, established by the Government of Ghana in 2003 and implemented by the NHIA under the Ministry of Health with support from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is a crucial social protection program. It provides coverage for various medical services, including outpatient care, oral and eye care, maternity services, and emergency care. The linkage of the NHIA card with the Ghana Card by dialing *929# now allows for seamless access to healthcare services across the country.
Hon. Dadzie emphasized that this new office aims to increase enrolment, improve service delivery, and create a more welcoming environment for clients. He expressed gratitude to President Akufo-Addo, the NPP Government, development partners, stakeholders, and the landowners who contributed to this achievement.
Dr. Aboagye DaCosta, CEO of NHIA, expressed his pleasure at inaugurating the fifth NHIA facility in Ghana. He commended the NPP Government, led by President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for their dedication to the well-being of Ghanaians. Dr. DaCosta outlined upcoming innovations, including a new annual health check initiative, which will offer free basic tests for diabetes, hypertension, and BMI to all Ghanaians. This initiative is part of the NHIA’s commitment to improving healthcare and reducing financial burdens associated with medical costs.
Dr. DaCosta also introduced the NHIA Fitness Club, launched at the Western Regional Office, and encouraged the public to prioritise their health through preventive measures, including regular physical activity and a balanced diet. He highlighted the new wellness corners in district offices, which will offer physical activity sessions and nutritional counselling.
The CEO announced reforms aimed at improving the NHIA system, including the elimination of copayments at NHIA facilities, enhanced tariff reviews to reflect economic conditions, and the introduction of an automatic price adjustment mechanism. He also noted ongoing consultations to extend coverage to non-Ghanaians and emphasized the importance of protecting both citizens and visitors to Ghana.
Dr. DaCosta concluded by urging all Ghanaians to support the NHIA’s efforts and reforms, ensuring that the organization fulfils its mission and continues to serve the health needs of the nation effectively.
