Forty-eight students in Shama Municipality benefit from WAPCo annual scholarship programme

The West Africa Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has, for the 2025/26 academic year, spent a total of GHC 631,584 on new scholarships for 68 beneficiary students in its host communities.
The 68 beneficiary students, made up of 35 and 33 females, are studying various programmes including Aerospace, Law, Mechanical Mining, Petroleum, Industrial
Electrical and Electronics, Geological Engineering, Surgery and Food Science and Technology across tertiary institutions in Ghana.
In the Shama municipality, 48 students from the five host communities- Shama Dwomo, Lower Inchaban, Abuesi and Aboadze- are benefitting from the programme this year.
Dr Isaac Adjei Doku, General Manager Corporate Affairs of WAPCo, speaking at the 2025/26 scholarship awards Cohort 11 ceremony in Shama in the Western Region,
said the company introduced the scholarship scheme in 2012 and over the period they had witnessed a remarkable growth in the pool of qualified talents available from the beneficiary communities.
He explained the beneficiaries included continuing scholarship students from the Shama municipality, and the total disbursement for the 2025/26 academic year was
1,336,284 cedis, while overall awards for students in Ghana for the academic year was GHC 1,907,604.
He said the company’s commitment to education extended beyond Ghana and that through its livelihood support programme, comprising the scholarship and Community Youth Empowerment Scheme (CYEs) they have made significant investment in four countries, Benin, Ghana, Nigeria and Togo.
Dr Doku indicated that the total expenditure on the scholarship scheme and the CYES across the four countries amounted to 4,786,885.386, dollars which has positively impacted the lives of 3,244 beneficiaries, providing them with the opportunity to pursue their dreams and contribute to the development of their communities.
He said in Ghana alone, the company had invested 951,600 dollars in scholarships and 213,600 in the CYES, benefitting a total of 710 individuals, adding “these numbers are not just statistics, they represent the hopes and aspirations of young minds who are now equipped with the tools to build a brighter future”.
Dr Doku told the awardees that “receiving a scholarship is not just an acknowledgement of your past achievements; it is an investment in your future; we believe in your potential to become the innovators, leaders and change-makers our world needs”.
He further said: “True success was not just measured by personal achievement, but by the positive impact you make on the lives of others, therefore, stay curious, stay
humble and always seek ways to give back.”
He said WAPCo believed that education was the cornerstone of progress and empowerment and that they were deeply committed to supporting educational initiatives because they know that knowledge unlocked doors to new ideas, solutions and opportunities.
The General Manger Corporate Affairs said the commitment to the future of WAPCo remained steadfast in its commitment to corporate social responsibility and the
advancement of the youth through education, “we will continue to seek avenues to empower talented students, nurture innovation and promote sustainable development in West Africa.
Mr Raphael Adu Taylor Municipal Director of Education, commended WAPCo for the gesture and said the support would go a long way to enhance development and break the cycle of poverty in the municipality.
He urged the beneficiaries to take their studies seriously so that the investment made by WAPCo would not go as a waste, but rather to motivate them to support more students.
He told the parents of the beneficiaries that their roles remained crucial in the education of their wards, adding that their financial burden has been eased, but they should continue to ensure that their wards were disciplined and maintained proper moral values. He called on other companies operating within the municipality to emulate WAPCO and also invest in the area. adding that education was a collective responsibility and all must work towards achieving it.
Mr. Paul Otis Dentu, the Municipal Chief Executive for Shama, also commended WAPCo for its support and urged the beneficiaries and their parents to take the
programme seriously to enhance their lives.
He urged the beneficiaries to return to the municipality after their training to help with its development.
Nana Koboabo III, the Queenmother of Aboadze, who presided, lauded the company for the annual gesture and asked that the company should make room to absorb the
students after the completion of their various programmes.
The beneficiary students expressed their gratitude to the company, noting that without the support they would not be able to complete their tertiary education.
