Shama Benefits From Usaid’s Sustainable Fisheries Management Project (Covid 19 Hand Washing Stations
Friends of the Nation, an implementing organisation for the USAID’ Sustainable Fisheries Management Project has made a presentation of Covid-19 protocol items to the people of the designated 10 landing beaches in Shama District through the District Assembly.The USAID/Ghana Sustainable Fisheries Management Project (SFMP) is a USAID funded Project being led by the Coastal Resources Center (CRC) of the University of Rhode Island and supports the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development/Fisheries Commission in the management of the fisheries resources of Ghana.
Friends of the Nation is an implementing partner of the SFMP.The project aims at rebuilding Ghana’s marine fish stocks and catches through the adoption of responsible fishing practices and contributes to the Government of Ghana’s fisheries development objectives and USAID’s Feed the Future Initiative goals of improved food security, economic growth and poverty alleviation.At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ghana, the SFMP was granted a seven-month cost extension to implement activities related to addressing the challenges of the pandemic on the fisheries sector.
One of the components of the project seeks to raise awareness on the seriousness of the threats and how it is transmitted and put in place measures to improve both personal/site systematic social distancing protocol such as use of nose masks, frequent washing of hands and other prevent measures.In this context, the project will support the setting up of hand washing systems and supply communication materials and posters to 10 fish landing beaches in Shama District. On behalf of the District, the Coordinating Director,Mr. Richard Gblevi, the Planning Officer, Alhaji Abu Mahama and the Presiding Member, Hon. Mark Ackon and other staff members of the Assembly received these protocol equipments and duly appreciated the stake holders involved in this project, mentioning Friends of the Nation, USAID, Care International and Ox Farm for their support to the people of Shama District.
