Shama District Assembly launches Green Ghana Day 2022

Shama District Assembly joined by many Ghanaians last Friday to plant trees as part of the activities to mark this year’s Green Ghana Day. The move is part of the districts commitment to contribute to the collective efforts to restore the country’s forest cover and sustain the environment.

The DCE Hon. Ebenezer Dadzie, with his Coordinating Director, senior management and staff of Shama District Assembly planted trees at Volta River Authority (VRA) and Shama Senior High School to support the wider objectives of the afforestation and reforestation programme under the Green Ghana Project.

The likes of Mr Listowel Opoku, Human Resource Manager (HRM) Forestry Commission stood in for the Regional Manager, Engineer Jacob Brown Yawson, Director Thermal Generation (VRA), Operations Manager, Engineer Obeng Kwaakye, Mr Ameyaw (HRM of SDA), Mr Monney, Finance Manager SDA, friends of the media etc. graced the programme, held at VRA clubhouse.

Speaking at the tree planting exercise, the Human Resource Manager of Forestry Commission, Mr Listowel Opoku reaffirmed the mandate of supporting sustainability.

He said ‘’Honourable Samuel Abu Jinapor in collaboration with Forestry Commission and desire of country targeted 5million trees to be planted in a day last year, exceeded to 7million trees planted. President and Minsters were pleased hence exceeded it to this year to plant over 20million trees in a day, 10million marked on Forest Reserve and another 10million planted Off Forest Reserve.’’

Speaking on the Importance and Species of trees, where to get some of the seedlings to plant, He went ahead to highlight on frequently asked questions with answers hence educating those present.

Engineer Jacob Brown Yawson added up by expressing his views on afforestation and reforestation in reference to last year. He also urged all Ghanaians in general to plant more trees to preserve the nation’s forest cover, which will help improve tourism in the country citing the likes of Akosombo Township, VRA etc.
