The Shama District Assembly on Monday, 17 August 2026, organized Day One of a Next Generation Leadership Training Programme for its Assembly Members, as part of efforts to strengthen leadership capacity and promote effective local governance within the District.
The training, which forms part of the Certificate Course on Next Generation Local Governance Leadership, is being facilitated by the Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS).
The programme is designed to equip Members of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) with the knowledge, competencies and skills required to effectively perform their roles and responsibilities within Ghanaβs decentralised local governance system.
FOCUS OF DAY ONE
Day One focused on enhancing participantsβ understanding of decentralisation and the local governance framework, while strengthening their capacity to effectively discharge their responsibilities as Assembly Members.
Participants were taken through key aspects of their deliberative, legislative, representative, executive and oversight responsibilities, with emphasis on the importance of effective leadership in promoting responsive and accountable local governance.
The sessions also highlighted the importance of community mobilisation, stakeholder engagement and effective communication in ensuring meaningful participation of citizens in local development.
The training further seeks to expose participants to career opportunities in local governance and prepare them for future leadership roles in national development. It also provides an opportunity for Assembly Members to build networks, share experiences and enhance their personal and professional development.
Day One provided a valuable platform for the Assembly Members to reflect on their leadership responsibilities and the critical role they play in representing their constituents and contributing to the development of the Shama District.
The Shama District Assembly remains committed to continuous capacity building and professional development of its Assembly Members as part of its broader efforts to strengthen local governance and accelerate sustainable development in the District.
