Distribution Of Rice And Oil For The Closed Season

As part of measures to prevent the depleting stock of fisheries in the sea, the government of Ghana introduced the closed season for the fishing industry. Every year, the closed season is observed at all the coastal areas including the Shama District assembly. This year’s closed season started from 1st July 2023 to 31st July 2023.

The government fully aware of the short-term economic impact of the closed fishing season on fishing and processors, continues to provide relief items in the form of rice and cooking oil to support fishers and fish processors during the closed period.

In Shama district, the Hon. Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Hon. Hawa Koomson led a team from the Ministry, Fisheries Commission, Member of Parliament for Shama and District Chief Executive to present the relief items to the coastal communities on Monday, 3rd July, 2023. Some of the communities visited included Aboadze, Abuesi, Anlo Beach, Shama Amenano, among others. In all, 600 bags and 257 boxes of oil were distributed to the affected people.
